Why We're Here

If you live in Alaska like we do, you know what it's like to overpay for shipping from online retailers that only offer UPS or FedEx delivery – the most expensive shipping options.

Many retailers offer “FREE SHIPPING” to other states in the U.S., but refuse to offer Alaskans the cost-effective shipping options we all know are available through the U. S. Postal Service.

We decided to do something about it!

About Us

Our family has lived and worked in Alaska for over 50 years -- from homestead life, to mining camps in the interior, to the hustle of the Bering Sea, and the remote towns and villages of Southeast Alaska. Have you ever ordered a $15 part, paid $150 for expedited delivery and had to wait 2 weeks to receive it? We have experienced the unending frustration of managing logistics throughout the state, and now, our solution can be your solution!

If you live in Alaska, you're probably familiar with these common situations:

  • “FREE SHIPPING” comes with fine print that excludes Alaska or anywhere “outside of the contiguous United States.”
  • How about the puzzling statement, “This item does not ship to Alaska”?
  • Exorbitant shipping surcharges and handling fees are added for Alaskan addresses.
  • You work your way through a retailer’s arduous checkout, only to find at the end that shipping costs double or even triple the final price of your purchase.
  • Despite paying premium rates for certain carriers, packages eventually show up in your USPS post office box anyway – arriving much later than the “Next Day” or “2nd Day” for which you were billed.

We have solved all these problems with Deliver2Alaska.com, and that’s what this is all about – Alaskans helping Alaskans get the job done!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1Can I manage packages being forwarded to multiple destinations?
No problem! Our web portal allows you to set up as many Alaskan destinations as needed, and you can choose which one to direct each package to when it arrives at our warehouse.
2Can my packages be automatically forwarded instead of confirming each one?
Absolutely! Some customers prefer to save transit time and not have to dialogue about their packages – they already know which USPS shipping method works best for their location.

From our web portal, you can select a default auto-forwarding destination, payment method, and mail class, and we will follow those instructions for every package that arrives for you. You'll still receive package notification and tracking information, but will not need to confirm each package. This is ideal for customers who are comfortable with our system and already know what they want, or those in rural locations with limited Internet access.
3How do I track my packages?
Your retailer will typically provide you with a tracking number through their shipping system to monitor until the package is delivered to our warehouse. After that point, as soon as your order is en route to Alaska, we'll send you a USPS tracking link to show the progress toward its final destination.
4Are there restrictions on package size and contents?
Because we use the USPS for forwarding, we must follow their restrictions on package size and allowed content.

The dimensional and weight restrictions are essentially a maximum of 108" overall dimension (girth plus length) and weight up to 70lbs. A package with a total dimension between 108"-130" is considered oversized and is restricted to Ground shipping only (and can be exceedingly expensive, even for USPS).

Please familiarize yourself with allowable content for USPS here to avoid shipments to us that we cannot legally send to you in the mail. Things like alcohol, ammunition, and marijuana products are PROHIBITED in the US mail, whereas things like lithium batteries and nail polish are allowed but have specific restrictions.

While our original intention was to refuse any hazmat shipping, we have found that with a bit of research we can ship many restricted items via Ground Advantage. So when we receive a package indicating lithium batteries or limited quantity hazmat, we will request content information from you the customer in order to confirm it is allowable and keep proper record of the shipment. There may be an added $5 fee for the extra effort involved in hazmat research.

If the contents cannot be shipped according to USPS regs, we cannot forward it and it will need to be returned (return fees apply).

If in doubt about hazmat regs, email us ahead of time to confirm and save us all the frustration of returning a package!
5What happens if a package cannot be forwarded using the Postal Service?
If a package cannot be shipped USPS due to size or weight, we have options. Sometimes it is simply a matter of repackaging into a smaller box, or dividing the contents into 2 packages.

We can also ship UPS or FedEx which allows for packages up to 165" overall and weight up to 150 lbs (shipping quotes for these carriers on requests).

OR if you live near an Alaska Airlines hub (anywhere the jet lands), we can ship packages Air Cargo (prices on request). This can cost surprisingly less than the other carriers and will get to your destination sooner!

If a package cannot be shipped USPS due to hazmat issues, you will need to initiate a return with the vendor and supply us with a return label. Note that our $5 handling fee applies to returns.
6Where is your warehouse operation?
It is based in north Idaho, a region where USPS rates to Alaska are cost-effective and shipping time is optimal. The address to use for your packages will include your name and a private mailbox number.
7Is your warehouse safe and secure?
Yes, the security of our customers' packages is paramount, and our warehouse is well protected and insured against any harm.
8What USPS delivery services can I choose from?
You can choose from Ground Advantage (formerly Parcel Post), Priority Mail, or Priority Express Mail. Media Mail is an option upon request.
9What if my package arrives at your facility damaged?
If we receive a damaged package we will alert you via email and post pictures of the damage in the package record. We can inspect the contents at your request.

We commonly see the need to simply reinforce poor packaging with sturdy tape or patching to make it ready for the next leg of the trip. We also have boxes available if something needs to be completely repackaged. Depending on time and material there may be added fees for this service.

If the contents itself is damaged, you will need to communicate with the vendor to resolve.
10How much time do I have to respond when a shipment arrives for me?
We will do everything in our power to reach you promptly and make sure that your shipment continues en route to its final destination in Alaska. If we do not receive any response from our attempts to contact you, we consider packages abandoned after 30 days and eventually dispose of unclaimed items.
11Can you consolidate or repackage shipments?
Yes, just let us know ahead of time how many packages you expect and when you are ready to have them consolidated. Our $5 handling fee applies per package. Consolidation is most beneficial for 3-4 small parcels. Combining large or heavy items can get you into higher postage rates and eliminate any savings.

It is not unusual for a vendor to use unnecessarily large boxes when shipping products. The larger the box, the higher the rate....if you think your package may be a victim of this problem, we can repack into a smaller box at your request (added fee depending on time and materials involved).
12Is my package insured?
Yes, USPS Ground Advantage, Priority, and Priority Express all include up to $100 of insurance coverage for loss, damage, or missing contents. If you want to add more coverage, please contact us via email before approving your package for shipping.
13What are your rates?
We use standard U.S. Postal rates plus a $5 handling fee per package (as well as a 3% charge to cover credit card processing fees).

If you have an idea of the weight and dimensions of a package you want to ship, you can estimate the cost by entering our zip code in ID and yours in AK into the USPS postal calculator.

We also have small fees for extra services like repackaging, consolidation or hazmat research (see questions above) -- but our goal is to keep it all reasonable and affordable for our fellow Alaskans!
14What about sales tax?
Unfortunately, by regulation, online sellers have to collect sales tax for the municipality to which they are selling. And since you are shipping to an Idaho address, they will charge you Idaho sales tax.

This is one reason we chose Idaho over Washington state for our location, ID sales tax is less. We understand this is a frustrating situation for customers who live where there is no sales tax....

If you do a lot of business with one online seller you could contact them and explain that the final destination is AK, and we could provide a letter explaining that we are a forwarding service. Most customers deal with so many different vendors that it would be tedious to make those arrangements, so to our knowledge none have tried.

We do not charge sales tax for our service.
15What happens if something unforeseen goes wrong?
Fortunately, you are dealing with humans and not robots or autonomous systems on our end! If we have a problem with something shipped to our facility and cannot proceed, we will contact you via email, or if need be, by phone to help you understand what’s gone wrong and what are your options.

Unfortunately, the USPS looses approximately 3% of the mail it processes. If you find yourself among that unlucky few, let us know and we will assist with filing a claim.

We take protecting our customers and their goods very seriously. Deliver2Alaska actively works with local law enforcement, FBI, FTC, USPS, and credit card fraud divisions to capture and prosecute criminals for postal and credit card fraud as well as identity theft.
